The Lānaʻi Community Association, LCA, is the oldest nonprofit organization on the island of Lānaʻi, established in the 1940s. The organization provides support for local groups, including youth sports, activities, and educational organizations, while helping improve economic opportunities for Lānaʻi residents through community events.

The LCA serves as an agency through which organizations may unite in their appeal to the public for financial aid and support, relieving the community from the burden of numerous individual drives and solicitations.

Hawaiʻi's Pine Isle

Why Lānaʻi Is Unlike Anywhere Else in Hawaiʻi

There are no traffic lights here. No resort strip, no tour buses, no line of rental cars idling at a scenic pullout. Lānaʻi is part of Maui County but it does not feel like Maui, and visitors who come expecting a smaller version of it are usually surprised within the first hour.

The island is roughly eighteen miles across, with a single small town at the center and everything else given over to red dirt, pine trees and open coast.

From the high ground you can see Molokaʻi across the channel and Maui behind you, and most days you will have the view to yourself. People call a lot of places in Hawaiʻi paradise. This one earns it by being empty.

That emptiness is exactly what makes an off-road excursion on Lānaʻi worth the crossing. The beauty of this island is not concentrated in one famous spot. It is spread across places that take a real 4x4 and someone who knows the way.

18 miles Across at its widest, and almost none of it paved past town.
Zero Traffic lights on the whole island, and no crowds at the overlooks.
8–9 hours A full private day with a resident guide who knows these trails.

Drive It Yourself

Lānaʻi Jeep Rentals and Self-Guided Adventures

Some people would rather find it themselves. If that is you, we offer self-guided Wrangler and Bronco rentals with daily special rates, and you take the same vehicles our hosts drive.

Every rental includes the vehicle, a briefing on the map of points of interest, the current road conditions, and a phone number someone actually answers.

Renting a Jeep here is not like renting one anywhere else. Most of the routes worth taking are unmarked, conditions shift with the weather, and there is no service station waiting at the far end of the day. Before you take an off-road Jeep out we will tell you what is passable that week and which turnoffs to avoid.

Before You Come

Planning Your Lānaʻi Day Trip

Most of our guests come over from Maui for the day. Here is what that actually looks like, and how to make the crossing worth it.

Getting to Lānaʻi

The passenger ferry runs daily from Māʻalaea Harbor on Maui to Mānele Harbor on Lānaʻi and takes about 70 minutes. Small commuter flights land at Lānaʻi Airport from Honolulu and Kahului.

When to Visit

Lānaʻi is dry and warm year-round. Summer brings the calmest water at Hulopoʻe Bay and Shipwreck Beach. Winter is green, cooler in the uplands, and the best season for whales in the channel. The red-dirt roads firm up fast after rain, so nearly every date works. We just adjust the route.

What to Bring

Closed shoes for the petroglyph trail, a light layer for the uplands, reef-safe sunscreen, a swimsuit if you want the water, and a camera. Water is provided. Lunch is not included, but we are happy to arrange a no-host stop, either a picnic lunch to take along or a sit-down meal in Lānaʻi City. Let us know which you would prefer when you book, because once you leave town there is nowhere to stop and resupply.

Good Questions

Lānaʻi Off-Road Tour Questions

How much does a private Lānaʻi off-road tour cost?

Our private guided tour is a flat $895 for the entire vehicle, not per person. That covers 2–4 guests, 8–9 hours with a resident guide, and complimentary pick-up anywhere on the island. Call (808) 563-3331 to reserve a date.

Can you drive to Garden of the Gods and Shipwreck Beach in a regular car?

No. Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) and the Keōmoku coast are all reached by unpaved red-dirt roads that require a genuine high-clearance 4x4. Standard rental cars are not permitted on them, and recovery on Lānaʻi is slow and expensive. That is why a guided Jeep or Bronco tour is the practical way to see this side of the island.

Do I need to stay overnight, or can I visit Lānaʻi for the day?

A day trip works well. The morning ferry from Māʻalaea Harbor reaches Mānele Harbor in about 70 minutes. We meet you at the harbor, and you are back for an evening return sailing. If you would rather not rush, Lānaʻi City has lodging and the island rewards a second day.

Is the tour suitable for kids and older guests?

Yes. The tour is private, so the pace is yours. Our Wranglers and Broncos are comfortable, the driving is done for you, and every walk, including the half-mile out to the Pōʻaiwa petroglyphs, is optional. Let us know who is coming and we will shape the day around them.

What is the difference between a guided tour and a Jeep rental?

On a guided tour your host drives, tells the history, and knows which trails are open that week. With a self-guided Jeep or Bronco rental you take the same vehicle out on your own, after a briefing on the map of points of interest, current road conditions and the routes to avoid. Rentals run on daily special rates and availability is limited.

What happens if it rains?

Lānaʻi is dry and showers usually pass quickly. Red-dirt roads can turn slick, so we reroute to whatever is safe and open that day rather than cancel. If conditions genuinely will not allow a tour, we will tell you before you commit and reschedule.

How far in advance should I book?

We run a small fleet and one group at a time, so summer and holiday dates fill early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable. Call (808) 563-3331 and we will tell you honestly what is open.

Sherry Menze

Lead Guide / Your Host

Sherry Menze has Lived on Lānaʻi since 1985 .. over 40 years ..and is deeply engrained in Island life and the love for her Ohana & community.

Before retiring Sherry worked at Mānele as The Harbor Master for over a Quarter Century where she had the privilege of meeting and exchanging stories with people from all over the world.

The Ocean has always been a big part of her life .As a Boat Captain .. Sherry spent many summers running Zodiac tours into the Giant Sea Caves along Kauaʻi’s famed Nā Pali Coast and ran Boat Charters out of Maui’s Lahaina Harbor for close to a decade. Sherry always says “Work was was like party and real life felt like work”

Touring Lānaʻi is especially interesting because the island has been privately owned for much of its modern history. Each owner has played a role in shaping and caring for the island and its ecosystem. With only about 16 miles of paved Road on the island, we have the chance to slow down and really take in the story of Lānaʻi — from its geologic beginnings and early Hawaiian settlement, through the plantation years, and into the changes we see today.
